Actor Benedict Cumberbatch’s home in London was attacked and damaged by a former chef who had a history of criminal convictions.

Jack Bissell, 35, kicked through the front garden’s iron gate and shouted, “I know you’ve moved here, I hope it burns down.” He then pulled up a plant, threw it at the garden wall, spit at the intercom, and tore it loose using a fish knife. Bissell fled the scene but was arrested after his DNA was found on the intercom.

Cumberbatch, his wife, and their three children were at home at the time of the attack and were “absolutely terrified,” according to a source close to the family. The family has had many sleepless nights since the attack and are worried that they may be targeted again.

Bissell pleaded guilty to criminal damage at Wood Green Crown Court on May 10 and was fined £250. He was also given a three-year restraining order preventing him from going near Cumberbatch’s family or the area they live in.

Bissell has a previous conviction for theft, three warnings for offences against property, a public order offence, and a drug offence. In 2015, he was photographed being arrested during protests against military intervention in Syria in central London.

It is not clear why Bissell targeted Cumberbatch. He offered no defense in court.

Cumberbatch is best known for his roles in the BBC’s Sherlock and films such as Doctor Strange, The Imitation Game, and The Power of the Dog.
