Kelly Clarkson has revealed that she took antidepressants during her divorce from Brandon Blackstock.
In an interview with the podcast “Las Culturistas,” Clarkson said that she was on the medication for about two months. She said that she was hesitant to take antidepressants at first because of her own experiences with mental health issues in her childhood. However, she said that she ultimately decided to take the medication because she was struggling to cope with the stress of her divorce.
“I was so against it,” Clarkson said. “Just because of the things I saw in my childhood. So against, like any kind of form of medication. I’m like, ‘No, there’s gotta be a better way of like, talking to someone, figuring this out.’ I don’t want to numb myself.”
Clarkson said that she started taking the medication after she realized that she could not “stop sobbing.” She said that she was so overwhelmed by her emotions that she had to cancel some of her work obligations.
“I cannot do this,” she remembers thinking. “And it was one of those things where I really had to put my pride aside. My thing was, I just can’t smile anymore for America right now. Like I’m not happy and I need help.”
Clarkson said that she is grateful that she decided to take the medication. She said that it helped her to “handle what I couldn’t handle then.” She also said that it was a “really good lesson” in the importance of putting her ego aside and seeking help when she needs it.
Clarkson’s divorce from Blackstock was finalized in March 2022. The couple has two children together, River Rose and Remington “Remy” Alexander.
Clarkson has been open about her mental health struggles in the past. In 2016, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. She has also spoken about her experiences with postpartum depression.
Clarkson’s decision to share her story about taking antidepressants is a powerful one. It can be difficult for people to talk about their mental health struggles, especially in the public eye. However, by sharing her story, Clarkson is helping to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness and showing others that they are not alone.
