Rob Young, a Canadian sound mixer who had a 40-year career in the industry, died on June 11 in Albi, France. He was 76.
Young was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the Clint Eastwood film Unforgiven, and also received nominations for BAFTA awards, a Cinema Audio Society prize, a Genie Award, and a Golden Reel Award.
He worked on many films over the years, including Roxanne, The Russia House, the first two First Blood films, the first two Night at the Museum movies, The Accused, Leaving Normal, This Boy’s Life, Double Jeopardy, Reindeer Games, Mission to Mars, The Pledge, She’s the Man, Shooter, and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.
Young was born in Sussex, New Brunswick, and studied Radio & Television Arts at Ryerson University in Toronto. He worked as a boom operator on U.S. features before moving to Vancouver, where he worked on documentaries, feature films, and TV shows.
In addition to his wife, Young is survived by his children, Brendan, Michael, and Gillian; sister Kathy; daughters-in-law Jane and Mackenzie; son-in-law Derek; and grandsons Isaac, Sebastian, and Wilder.
A celebration of his life will be held on July 23 at the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver. To honor him, his family asks that you perform a random act of kindness.
