British TV presenters Ant and Dec are set to reboot the show that made them child stars three decades ago.
The duo, who rose to fame as PJ and Duncan on Byker Grove, will be executive producers on the new series, which is being developed by Fulwell 73 and Mitre Studios.
The original show, which ran from 1989 to 2006, was set in a youth club in Newcastle and told the stories of a group of teenagers. It was known for its hard-hitting storylines and launched the careers of many stars, including Ant and Dec.
The new series is said to be aimed at a primetime audience and will “engage with a new generation of teenagers navigating the different challenges faced by young adults today.”
Fulwell 73’s Leo Pearlman and Heather Greenwood will serve as executive producers, with Ant and Dec as executive producers and creative consultants for Mitre.
The show is the latest in a string of reboots of British TV shows from the 1990s and early 2000s. In recent years, there have been new versions of shows such as Waterloo Road, The Inbetweeners, and The Mighty Boosh.
Ant and Dec said they were “excited” to be working on the reboot and that they wanted to “bring this iconic series back to life.”
They also said that they were committed to providing training and opportunities for young people in the North East of England, where the show will be filmed.
Byker Grove is expected to air on a major streaming platform in the near future.
