Jim Caviezel, who starred as Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ,” has recalled the struggles he faced while filming the movie.
Caviezel, 54, told Fox News Digital that he was struck by lightning while filming the Sermon on the Mount scene, and that he was also hit in the head with a cross weighing over 150 pounds.
“It fell on my head, and I bit through my tongue and my cheek,” Caviezel said. “And it was actually in the film. You see blood streaming out of my mouth” during the scene. The actor’s left shoulder was also dislocated.
“I had really struggled with that all film,” he said.
Despite the injuries, Caviezel said he is “grateful” for the opportunity to play Jesus in the film.
“It was a great honor,” he said. “I’m glad I did it.”
Caviezel also confirmed that a sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” is in the works. The sequel, which is tentatively titled “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,” is set to cover the days between Jesus’ death and resurrection.
“It’s happening on the writing side,” Caviezel said. “I asked him about three dates, and he gave me a maybe on all three of them. So, I have to see where he’s at. I know he’s going to do it.”
Gibson previously revealed that the sequel will be “a massive undertaking” and that it will “juxtapose against one another even from different time periods in order to illustrate what something means in a more full way.”
Caviezel said that he is “excited” about the sequel and that he is “looking forward to working with Mel again.”
“I think it’s going to be a great film,” he said.
The original “Passion of the Christ” was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $600 million at the box office. The film was also nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Makeup.
It remains to be seen whether the sequel will be able to match the success of the original, but Caviezel is confident that it will be a “great film.”
“I think it’s going to be a powerful film,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a film that people will remember for a long time.”
