Geraldo Rivera has opened up about his recent departure from Fox News, revealing that he quit after being “fired” from The Five, the network’s afternoon panel show.
Rivera told The View on Thursday that he had a “toxic relationship” with another castmember on The Five, which led to his firing. He did not identify the co-star, but said that he was a male and not Jeanine Pirro.
“I also thought it was very unfair that I was not judged objectively in our disputes, but rather that he was always favored,” Rivera said. “I was the one … suspended three times. My appearances, I had two, three appearances scheduled weekly, then bi-weekly, then monthly, then they kind of disappeared, they were canceled in the last day right before I was supposed to go on. So, I was really ticked off.”
Rivera said that he was eventually called by two female executives at Fox News and told that he was being fired from The Five. He said that he had a year and a half left on his contract, but that he decided to quit rather than stay on the show.
“I said, ‘Well, stuff it, if you fired me from the No. 1 show, then I’m going to quit.’ And that’s basically what happened,” Rivera said.
He added that he felt like his “ideology does not fit Fox” anymore.
Rivera’s departure from Fox News comes after years of tension between him and the network. In 2018, he was suspended for two weeks after making controversial comments about the death of Aretha Franklin. He also sparred with other Fox News hosts on several occasions.
Despite the acrimonious ending to his time at Fox News, Rivera said that he is not angry with the network.
“In the interim, in the days that led up to my last day of work, they were so kind to me,” he said. “They were so nice, remembering all the things we did together over the 20-odd years.”
Rivera said that he is now looking for a new home for his show, but that he is not sure what the future holds.
“I’m a free agent,” he said. “I’m a free bird.”
