Melanie Lynskey has opened up about why she initially turned down auditioning for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The actress said that she was not sure about making the jump from film to television at the time, and that her agent was also not supportive of the idea.
“It was very early in my career,” Lynskey said. “I had a very old-school agent who was like, ‘TV? That’s for has-beens!’ and I was like, ‘I don’t think it is anymore.'”
Lynskey also said that she was not sure if she was right for the role of Willow Rosenberg, which ultimately went to Alyson Hannigan.
“I don’t remember if it was an offer or if it was like, ‘Would you come read for it?’ or what it was,” Lynskey said. “But we stayed in touch after that. And then I guess they were replacing the person from the pilot at a certain point and I had stayed in touch with [Joss], and he said, ‘Now do you think you would want to do it?’ And I had seen the pilot and I was like, ‘Oh, this is good,’ and I kind of took my agent into it. And then, it became this whole thing of, ‘Well, now you have to audition.’ So I auditioned.”
Lynskey said that she is happy with how things turned out, and that she is a big fan of Alyson Hannigan’s performance as Willow.
“Alyson Hannigan got it, who was absolutely wonderful,” Lynskey said. “All was [cast] as it should have been.”
Lynskey went on to have a successful career in both film and television, and she has been nominated for two Emmy Awards. She is currently starring in the Showtime series Yellowjackets.
In conclusion, Melanie Lynskey turned down the role of Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer because she was not sure about making the jump from film to television at the time. She is now a successful actress in both mediums, and she is a big fan of Alyson Hannigan’s performance as Willow.
