Wil Wheaton, best known for his roles in “Star Trek” and “Stand By Me,” has claimed that his parents stole nearly all of his salary from his childhood. The actor, 50, is currently striking with thousands of other actors and entertainers in Hollywood and around the country in support of the Writers Guild of America (WGA).
In an Instagram post, Wheaton wrote that he joined the strike because he wants to protect the rights of actors, including the right to residuals. He said that his parents stole his residuals, which were all he had to support himself after he left home.
“I have healthcare and a pension because of my union,” Wheaton wrote. “The AMPTP billionaires want to take all that security away so they can give CEOs even more grotesque wealth at the expense of the people who make our industry run.”
Wheaton also pointed out that many actors who star in popular streaming shows do not earn enough to qualify for health insurance. He said that the studios are forcing these actors to accept buyouts for their residuals that are worth less than what he earned for one week on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
“If not now, when?” Wheaton asked. “I mean, I haven’t even touched on AI and working conditions.”
Wheaton concluded his post by saying that he is fighting for the future of the entertainment industry in the face of changing technology. He said that he is “proud to stand with my fellow artists in this fight.”
In addition to his roles in “Star Trek” and “Stand By Me,” Wheaton has also appeared in “The Big Bang Theory” and “Teen Titans.” He is a vocal advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken openly about his own struggles with depression and anxiety.
The strike by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA is the first major strike in Hollywood in over six decades. The two unions are seeking better pay, benefits, and working conditions for their members. The strike has already had a significant impact on the entertainment industry, with many productions being delayed or canceled.
It remains to be seen how long the strike will last or what the outcome will be. However, Wheaton’s words and actions have shown that he is committed to fighting for the rights of actors and ensuring that they are treated fairly.
