The actor, who is starring as Ken in the upcoming film, arranged for a group of dancers dressed as Ken and Barbie to perform a surprise dance routine for Gerwig. The flash mob took place while Gerwig was in the middle of a Pilates session, and she was reportedly both surprised and delighted by the gesture.
The video of the flash mob was shared on the official Barbie movie Instagram account, along with a message from Gosling. “As Kens know, sometimes the only way to express your feelings is through song and dance!” he wrote. “Ken Ryan sent these special Barbies and Kens to start Greta’s birthday with all the feelings!!”
Gerwig has previously spoken about how she was inspired to cast Gosling as Ken after seeing his performance on Saturday Night Live. “You know those actors you can just sort of feel that they know what’s funny, and I always felt that about him,” she said. “And then I’m a big fan of all of his SNLs, I always thought he was great on SNL.”
The Barbie soundtrack recently made history in the UK with six tracks in the Top 40, including Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night Away,” Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” and Nicki Minaj’s “Barbie World” featuring Ice Spice.
The film, which is directed by Greta Gerwig and also stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, is set to be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.
