Bethany Joy Lenz has opened up about her experience being in a cult for a decade, and how her “One Tree Hill” co-stars tried to rescue her.
Lenz, who played Haley James Scott on the hit show, said that her involvement in the cult led to “isolation” and “distrust” between her and her friends and family.
“They have to make you distrust everyone around you so that the only people you trust are, first and foremost, the leadership and then, people within the group if the leadership approves of them and isn’t in the middle of pitting you against each other, which happens all the time also,” she told Variety.
Lenz said that her co-stars were aware of her involvement in the cult and tried to help her, but she was “stubborn” and “committed” to what she believed were the best choices for her.
“For a while, they were all trying to save me and rescue me, which is lovely and so amazing to be cared about in that way,” she said. “But I was very stubborn.”
Lenz said that she eventually left the cult on her own, and credited her time on “One Tree Hill” with helping her to “wake up.”
“I was there nine months out of the year in North Carolina,” she said. “I had a lot of flying back and forth, a lot of people visiting and things like that, but my life was really built in North Carolina. And I think that spatial separation made a big difference when it was time for me to wake up.”
Lenz said that she hopes to write a tell-all book about her experience in the cult to help others who may be in similar situations.
“I would love to write about my experience,” she said. “Also, I don’t know how much I can say because there are still people and legal things in place that make it more complicated for the timing of that.”
Lenz’s story is a reminder of the dangers of cults and the importance of trusting your instincts. If you or someone you know is involved in a cult, please reach out for help. There are many resources available to help you escape and recover.
