Oprah Winfrey is lending a helping hand to the victims of the wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Winfrey joined in efforts to distribute emergency supplies at an emergency center set up within the war memorial stadium in Maui’s capital, Wailuku. She helped to distribute pillows, diapers, shampoo, sheets, and pillowcases to those who have been left homeless by the fires.

Winfrey told the BBC that she was “overwhelmed” by the devastation caused by the fires, but she was also heartened by the outpouring of support from the community.

“It’s a little overwhelming,” she said. “But I’m really so pleased to have so many people supporting, people bringing what they can and doing what they can.”

Winfrey is a longtime resident of Maui, and she has been vocal about her support for the victims of the fires. She has also pledged to donate $1 million to help with relief efforts.

The fires on Maui have so far claimed the lives of 80 people. Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen has warned that the death toll “could go up.”

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said the fires are likely to be the largest natural disaster in the state’s history. Hawaii’s attorney general has announced a “comprehensive review” into how the authorities responded to the wildfires.
